Come run the 20th anniversary of the World’s Best 10K San Juan (WB10K), an internationally renown, World Class 10K road race in San Juan, Puerto Rico which takes place on February 26th, 2017.
Since 2008, the World's Best 10k race has received the highest level- Gold Label designation from the IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations).
Each year, the IAAF awards a designation referred to as an IAAF Road Race Label to leading road races around the world.
The races are divided into three categories: marathons, half marathons and other races.
There are three levels of label for each of these categories: IAAF Gold Label, IAAF Silver Label, IAAF Bronze Label The World's Best 10k San Juan race originated as a celebration of the 4th Anniversary of the Teodoro Moscoso Bridge, which began operations at the 23rd of February 1994.
The World’s Best 10K received an IAAF Gold Label, award that recognizes the efforts employed over the years to build the race into one of the world’s leading road race.
The event is capped at 15000.
From its origin, it was meant to be a total commitment affair and not just a road race.
As such, it required total involvement of all sectors; business, goverment, community, news media and the sport world.
It seemed the perfect way to reciprocate to our community the strong endorsement always given to our Toll Bridge operation. Our first two races, in 1998 and 1999, were focused toward our local athletes.
For our third race in 2000, once again we tried to motivate our local athletes even further, by converting our race into an international event, and by inviting some of the best runners in the world.
It was the first race in Puerto Rico to be certified by the Association of International Marathons and Road Races (AIMS) and by the International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF) and by the local Long Distance Running Association ("Comite de Fondismo") It was also the first race transmitted live through Internet, with audio, video and results.
We are satisfied that our first international race was ranked among the 20 most competitive races in the World. In the year 2001 the event adopted the name of World's Best 10k Race, which took place on February 18, 2001.
With a Grand Prize Bonus of $100,000.00 for the athlete, man or woman, able to establish, a new World best record for 10 kilometers.
Our 1st place prize is $15,000.00 with a time bonus of $5,000, for men under 27:30 minutes and women under 31 minutes.
It was absolutely necessary for the World's best runners athletes (E.g.
Paul Tergat, Khalid Khannouchi, Tegla Laroupe, Lornah Kiplagat and many others) to be present at the World Best 10K.
